‘Oh shit!’
…Betty groaned the following morning, waking up in her own bed.
Her head was thumping then she felt the nausea creep through her throat.
Sprinting to the bathroom, she threw up into the toilet bowl before collapsing on to the floor. The last thing she remembered was kissing Tom.
And she couldn’t be sure that happened.
Slowly she got to her feet, grabbing some painkillers from the medicine cabinet and swallowing them by putting her head underneath the tap to get a drink.
Her reflection said it all.
Rough.
She then decided she needed something to drink, so she stumbled towards her kitchen to get a bottle of water. It was while she was swallowing that she tried to figure out what had happened but her eyes were directed towards the windows.
The blinds were open.
Focussing on what was outside, she realised three people were looking into her flat. One of them was Tom and he was smiling.
Betty looked down and noticed she was wearing just her knickers. Her legs were like lead, very similar to how they’d felt the day before. She flung herself on to the floor, watching the water spill. Crawling towards the window, she pulled up the blind then did the same to the other one.
A hot flush had developed and she was sweating hard. Her blackboard said it all, embarrassment.
The day had already started badly, literally tits up or down, depending where her nipples were pointing.
Betty took a shower, walked down the stairs, took a deep breath and ran into the café. It was after nine and her mother was behind the counter with Hortense serving.
‘Oh,’ the African lady said. ‘You had a good time?’
‘I don’t know,’ Betty gulped, smiling brightly, walking towards her mother and kissing her on the cheek. ‘Thanks for this but I can take over.’
‘I thought you were going to take the morning off?’ Doris looked confused. ‘Betty, you smell like a brewery. Are you still drunk?’
‘I’ve showered and washed my skin within an inch of my life,’ she replied, unwrapping a mint and putting it into her mouth. ‘I’m fine.’
‘I’ll stay here a bit longer to see if you start to sober up,’ Doris said reassuringly. ‘Children nowadays.’
‘I totally agree. I do not know what the Good Lord thinks about their behaviour!’ sighed Hortense.
Betty just got stuck into her work and ignored them for the rest of the morning.
By lunchtime she could hear a few mutterings from the builders coming in across the road. A couple of them were smiling at her as she glared from behind the counter.
‘That’s no way to treat your customers,’ her mother said, handing plates to Hortense. ‘You’re hung over and being ultra-sensitive. Go back upstairs and lie down.’
‘No, we do not sell chocolate macaroons,’ she heard Hortense say to one of the builders. ‘Who said we had them here?’
‘Our boss said he saw some chocolate macaroons this morning,’ the man laughed.
Betty knew who it came from.
Then the devil himself walked into the shop, grinning.
‘What do you want?’ she said, feeling her face get very hot as she broke out into a sweat.
